Essentials, Classic and Paleo Plus: What is the Difference?

Since Paleo Ridge opened its doors in 2014, the team has been working around the clock to create and develop the very best raw dog food on the market. It all started with our Classic 80:10:10 range and our DIY range, in 2019 our Paleo Plus range was born and in 2022, we welcomed Essentials.

Getting to know these products and what the difference is between them is important, as finding the perfect meal for your pooch is a core value that Paleo Ridge is built on. This raw feeding guide will help you navigate our raw dog meats to help you make an informed decision.

Essentials

Paleo Ridge Essentials are formulated to provide dogs with all the benefits of raw feeding, whilst offering the best possible value to owners. The value of this range has improved customer access to a BARF diet, encouraging pet owners to make the switch to raw dog food.

Each meal has been specially formulated to ensure your dog has the very best meals at the lowest price possible. These contain 80% meat, bone and offal, along with 20% seasonal vegetables with 0.5% of extra virgin olive oil.

All of the ingredients in this range are ethically and sustainably sourced.. Each product is grain-free with no artificial ingredients or additives making this a hypoallergenic product.

The meals in this range come in 500g recyclable packs. There are a variety of flavours to choose from, though it's important to note that these products are not single proteins. The name of the product highlights the main protein in the meal, if you are after single-protein meals, we will get to that shortly!

The great thing about having mixed protein meals is, the variety! With feeding raw, it's important to feed a wide variety of proteins as different animals contain different vitamins and minerals, so the wider the variety, the more nutritious the diet!

Because of the special formula of these meals, we can offer these at just £2.29 per pack.

Essentials are suitable for dogs of all ages from 8 weeks old.

Classic

Our Classic 80:10:10 raw dog food is packed full of natural ingredients. The formula follows the prey model of raw feeding with each meal containing 80% human-grade, outdoor-reared meat, 10% offal and 10% bone.

This range was our firstborn and is stripped back to basics with its formula. There are no vegetables, fruits or oils added to these meals, just purely the finest cuts of meat, bone and offal.

Some dogs cannot tolerate any fruit or veg, so this range is perfect for your pooch if they have an intolerance. For those who can tolerate them, you can add any vegetables or fruits you like giving you the opportunity to explore different recipes!

Another great perk of this range is, that it includes single-protein meals and offers meals with and without tripe too. Tripe is an excellent addition to your dog's diet due to its incredible health benefits. Again, we understand that not ALL dogs like or tolerate tripe so there is the option to have with or without.

All of the ingredients in this range are ethically and sustainably sourced in the UK. Each product is grain-free with no artificial ingredients or additives making this a hypoallergenic product.

The meals in this range come in 1kg recyclable packs, with seven available in 500g. Like the Essentials, we also offer a variety of proteins to choose from.

Prices start from £4.80 per kilo and vary depending on the meal.

All chicken we use in our Classic range is organic and all of the tripe we use is green (unbleached) and fresh.

Classic meals are suitable for dogs of all ages from 8 weeks old, with the exception of the Puppy Weaning Paste which can be fed between 3 - 6 weeks old.

Paleo Plus Special Diet has been formulated for dogs with kidney issues. This product is low-fat, low-purine and low-phosphorous too. It includes 20% superfoods including carrot, which is high in Vitamin A, ideal for keeping the kidneys lubricated. Special Diet is suitable for dogs without kidney issues too!

Paleo Plus is our most premium range and is suitable for dogs of all ages from 8 weeks old.

DIY

Our versatile DIY products are a range of complementary raw food items that can be given as a treat or part of a meal. Some people like to make their own meals, which is a great way to get variety in their dog’s diet.

Whole raw bones are a great addition to your dog's feeding routine, chewing them can help promote oral health and hygiene and is great for mental enrichment. When feeding whole raw bones for the first time, we advise that you monitor your dog just to be on the safe side.

Remember, too much bone can cause white, crumbly stools and constipation. Our complete meals contain 10% bone content, if you want to give a whole raw bone, you can try one per week to start and see how they get on.

If you would like to make your dog's meals using our DIY products, please ensure you use the 80:10:10 formula for a balanced meal. You can calculate this using your dog's daily feed amount. For example, if your dog feeds 500 per day, you would need to use 400g of meat, 50g of bone and 50g of offal.

The products included in this range contain all the classic flavours, but also includes kangaroo courtesy of our friends Down Under!

The above products are suitable for dogs of all ages from 8 weeks old when mixed. For the whole raw bones, you can judge this on the size of your pup, we would usually recommend waiting for a few months and always monitor them whilst feeding at a young age.

If you are unsure how much food you need to feed your dog equivalent to their weight, use our dog food calculator to help work this out.
